When Whoopi Goldberg was a child, she was labelled ‘dumb’ and ‘stupid’. She struggled to grasp what she was taught and believed that “all that paperwork” made her look “retarded”.
It wasn’t until she was an adult, after dropping out of school and spending many years on welfare and on drugs, that she found out she had dyslexia and realised that she didn’t “want to be retarded all her life.”
Goldberg soon proved she was not stupid – in fact she was an extraordinarily gifted actress. Fortunately her mother acknowledged this giftedness and had told her all her life that she could be anything she wanted.
Goldberg has gone on to become a highly successful actress, comedian, radio host and television personality. She is one of only ten people to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award. She is also an author and a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador. Whoopi Goldberg discovered her gift of dyslexia.
